    El lunes, 18 de julio de 2011, músicos de mariachi y miembros de la comunidad local se reunieron en la Plaza Garibaldi, México, DF, para llevar a cabo una protesta en contra de la apertura de una escuela de música que lleva por nombre Casa del Mariachi. Entre otras inconformidades, los manifestantes afirman que dicha escuela descaradamente subestima la música cuyo nombre ostenta— una música que le ha brindado fama mundial a la plaza en la que la Casa del Mariachi se encuentra ubicada.

    Jose "Pepe" Martinez Sr. sat down with Mariachimusic.com to talk about the new upcoming Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán cds and Mariachi Vargas' upcoming concerts in Paris. First, the newest cd, Sinfonico No. 3, with the Philharmonic Orchestra from the state of Queretaro, is lively and romantic. Mariachi Vargas is also working on recording another new cd which they hope to release at the Mariachi Encuentro Internacional in Guadalajara in September. Mariachi Vargas will be recording a live cd with the Houston Grand Opera in Paris, France during a performance of the six performances of first mariachi opera Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, September 23-27, 2011 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

    California female vocalist, Susie Garcia, premieres in the Shakespeare play Measure for Measure currently showing in the Ashland, Oregon. She along with two other female mariachi musicians make up the group, Las Colibri, in a modern take of the Shakespeare play. Mary Alfaro, from Brownsville, TX, Vanessa Calderon, from La Puente, CA, and Susie Garcia are scheduled to perform 121 shows this year as part of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Green Show.   • Extravaganza Winners set for Oregon

    San Antonio’s Mariachi Extravaganza winners will perform in Ashland, Oregon at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival Green Show July 26-31. Mariachi Cascabel from Rio Grande City High School in Rio Grande City and Karenn Lazo from Roma will represent the Extravaganza. Mariachi Cascabel was selected as first place winners in the high school category, and Karenn Lazo as “Best Mariachi Vocalist in the U.S.,” by members of the internationally acclaimed and Mexico City based Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. The 14 members of Mariachi Cascabel and Karenn Lazo will perform 4 thirty-five minute shows July 26-31 under the direction of Alex Rodriguez, director of Mariachi Cascabel.
